What we've been up to and May Photo Dump

We've definitely been enjoying the lazy days of summer! Although, they aren't so lazy with two one year olds! I'll let the pictures guide this post and hopefully get back to more of a blogging schedule now that we've settled into our summer routine.

This blog post will cover our activities for May. I was counting down the days until school let out and I could hang out with these babies. Here they are playing at Gigi's house. I love getting pictures at work!

Emma Cate picked up this strange sort of crawl for about a week until she learned how to really crawl. It cracked us up!

We went to Jay's side of the family's annual reunion. We got there a little late but had fun meeting all sorts of family members. They normally hold it over memorial day weekend and I was wasn't able to go last year due to travel restrictions with my pregnancy. 

I love these pictures at Jay's Grandma's house. She hasn't changed any of her decorating ever and everything is vintage. I'm sure they had pictures of Jay playing on the same things!

After getting blisters from playing in our walkers outside, Gigi decided it was time for the babies to get some shoes! Here they are trying on their new keens.

The next few are from music together class. I am amazed at how much my mom's hair has grown since these pictures were taken! Both Gigi (my mom) and Gran (Jay's mom) came to music class to help out with the babies while I took pictures. It was our last class until fall and we are missing it SOOO much!

5/22- I spent a LOT of time working on the babies' first birthday party! Luckily we had a lot of downtime at school with field trips so I used that time to cut all the paper products

5/22- We started introducing whole milk to the babies at their 11 month birthday. We started small and built up so that they would be on 100% whole milk by their first birthday and I could stop breastfeeding

5/23- Mommy and Daddy date night!

5/24- Our favorite Food Truck Friday. All these yummy food trucks park in an empty lot in Southend. We brought the baby gates and got tons of weird looks but our babies were happy and safe and mom and dad got to enjoy themselves! This was later than normal bed time so we changed the babies into PJs there and they fell asleep on the way home!

5/26- We took the babies to the lake for the first time! The water was FREEZING but Holden and Daddy got in. Emma Cate HATED her life jacket and cried pretty much the entire time. Needless to say, next time we went to the lake we got a babysitter. 

5/27- Memorial Day was spent at Gigi's pool. The babies had a great time despite the cooler weather and water! The baby pool was a huge hit. 

That night we had a fun cookout at my parent's house!  

5/30- I took the day off work and my mom and I headed to Augusta to bring the babies to my sister, Allie's PT class. They were studying physical development of babies and needed some hands on learning so we volunteered the babies. The babies were exhausted after playing with all the PT students!

5/31- We went to food truck friday again with our friends, the londry's. I can't believe I don't have any pictures of all the kids together but they also have a set of boy girl twins!

So this is probably the germ-iest thing ever but the kids go nuts when we put boomer in their cribs. They squeal and get so excited!

One Year

Emma Cate and Holden,
You are 1 year old. We made it!

What our life is like:

Lots has changed in the past month! Our routine is very different! I stopped nursing one week before you both turned one. I had planned to quit earlier but it never seemed like a good time. Eventually I got down to one pump a day and on a random Thursday I just decided I didn't want to pump anymore and that was that.

Now that school is out, you both wake up anytime between 7:30 and 8:30. I am loving the mornings you sleep until 8:30! We have a little routine where I come in your room and hang up your clothes from the night before and put away your cloth diapers for the day while you both talk and play in your cribs. We change diapers and start our day. On the way out of the room Emma Cate leads the way by crawling and I always hold Holden because he loves to turn off the lights. He joins EC on the floor and they both speed crawl down the hall and into the family room with Sophie and Boomer following them all the way. You have a 6oz sippy cup of milk when you first wake up and then you eat breakfast half an hour later. You've been loving eggs recently and I've been making you some interesting breakfast scrambles!

You both have become much pickier eaters lately and its making this foodie mama pretty sad! I don't know what happened to my try anything babies! Emma Cate is my dainty eater and prefers fruit to anything else. Holden LOVES to eat and can put down some food.  Holden loves to fill his mouth to the brim and resembles a chipmunk. He always has food all over himself and in his hair. Many nights I go to give him a bottle before bed and I find food still in his mouth from an hour before. Hoarder. Emma Cate picks up each piece individually and feeds herself one piece at a time. She is a pretty clean eater and for that I am thankful!

We play in the family room until 10am when you both go down for your morning nap. You sleep until 12 or 12:30 and sometimes I have to wake up both up at 12:30 to get some food in you before swim lessons! You eat lunch around 12:30 and have another 6oz sippy of milk.

We play or run errands after lunch and head to swim lessons at 2:30. We just switched you into your big kid car seats and MAN they are a PAIN. I am missing the days of the snap and go infant carriers! We have swim every weekday for 20 minutes. It's a lot to get everyone ready everyday for such a small amount of time but I'm loving that you both are taking infant swim rescue and are learning to save yourself if you ever accidentally fall in a body of water.

We finish swim lessons around 3:15 and head home to take afternoon naps from 3:30-4:30. Emma Cate is hit or miss with her afternoon nap but Holden definitely enjoys his nap time. I think we have a miniature daddy on our hands :)

We play until dinner time around 6:30. You have another small sippy cup of milk with dinner. After dinner we clean up and play for a bit before bedtime. We are starting to get into a bedtime routine. We change into pj's drink bottles, brush Emma Cate's teeth, read books, and pray before laying down to sleep at 7:30.

Developmentally, Holden has changed a lot this month. He loves to push his walker and Emma Cate's YBike around and can cruise with great speed. He took a few steps towards me during playtime but continues to loving speed crawling. He is cruising all the time on furniture and takes a few steps from one piece to another. Emma Cate changes her crawl everyday. Sometimes she crawls like Mogley from the Jungle Book with her legs straight and her tush in the air. Sometimes we have one straight leg and one bent leg for a little stanky leg action. She LOVES to be chased and giggles all the way down the hall.

You both have become talkers. I have no clue what you are saying but you love to talk. You both know how to scream to get attention and I love hearing you babble with each other in your cribs. You get so excited when you see the dogs and Emma Cate always screeches at the top of her lungs! Holden is more of a grunter! You've both got Dada down and we're working on mama. Sometimes I swear Holden says hi dada.

We've just started to have to worry about discipline. Tonight I was passing out sippy cups while we were in the family room playing and Holden's was leaking so I took it to the sink to fix it and heard Emma Cate's head hit the ground and a huge scream. I looked at the babies and saw EC on her back and Holden drinking out of her cup. We had some hugs for Emma Cate and a little time out session for Holden. I'm starting to research discipline with two babies. Holden is the more aggressive one and Emma Cate is pretty passive. Right now we are working on refocusing their behavior when they do something that isn't nice. We'll see how this goes. Most of the time you both play together just fine. Emma Cate is great at independent play and when Holden is napping and she is awake, she is content to play independently while I get work done. Holden is my needier child and always wants me to be with him. I read that babies at this stage need lots of positive reinforcement so I always try to give them my full attention and praise them when they do things well.  You both have been giving kisses lately but only to each other and your stuffed animals and EC's doll baby (Marina- named from the cabbage patch adoption agency :)). Mommy and Daddy are still waiting for our kisses!

Hair: It keeps growing (especially in the back) and we think you'll have dark hair

Clothes: Mainly 12 months. We are loving bubbles now that you are crawling everywhere. We have to tuck all of your dresses into your bloomers to allow you the ability to crawl
Eating: 5-6oz sippies 3 times a day and bottle before bed. Eating full meals three times a day.
Likes: being tossed in the air, being tickled on the neck, shaking her head no, being chased, when mommy sneezes and say achooo really loud, the swings, her wagon, her marina doll, Sophie and Boomer, "hissing", playing "so big", clapping, flying like an airplane, her paci, the blue pop up toy (you just squeal with delight when I bring it out!)
Dislikes: mommy walking out of the room, being set down or left alone, diaper changes (you are such a wiggle worm!) Food on her tray when she is done eating (you are a swiper and all your food ends up on the floor)
Development: You are crawling like a champ, pulling up, cruising, and standing independently for a few seconds. You've even started clapping your hands while standing. You are learning what things mean, you clap on demand and also when something funny happens or when mommy sings or dances, you wave bye bye, play so big, you can throw your paci with some might, you know how to find the ball when we ask, and you give sweet kisses, you also LOVE to take your paci and put it in my mouth. Teeth: You've got 4 teeth! You got your bottom two first and then the upper two. The upper two are pretty big and you have a nice size gap between them!

Sleep: You love to sleep on your tummy with your tush in the air. You always wake up with red marks all over your face from your hands and the crib slats. You wake up SOOOO happy. You practically jump up and down and screech when we wake you up!

Extra: It is so fun to watch you grow into the person you will become. You cry if you don't like something but are quick to change into the smiley girl we love. You started pulling your headbands off of your head so we've switched to tiny bows in your hair and you seem to tolerate it. You love to wrinkle up your nose and hiss at us. Playing ball is probably your favorite activity and you giggle like crazy when we roll the ball to you. You like to watch Holden and you notice him a lot. You get upset if you are in your crib and he is not in his. You are awesome with your sippy cup and also take a straw very well. You are timid in the water and don't care for the pool as much as your brother. You continue to love music and playing our "instruments". You love to swing and go super high. You are definitely the daring one! You LOVE the baby gate and you will climb on it and not know how to get down so you scream until we rescue you. You love climbing so much that we are planning to sign you up for little gym classes soon! You are sweet and a little sassy. You have your Daddy wrapped around your finger and he is hoping that you are a Daddy's girl. You have a fun, sweet spirit and we cannot wait to see the little girl you are becoming! Clothes: Mostly 12 month but you are starting to outgrow those and are getting into 18 month

Eating: 6oz sippies 3 times a day and lots of finger foods at meal times. You are a BIG eater and a growing boy! 
Likes: dancing, being naked, standing up, you love exploring. You love your lovie and holding blankets up to your face. You love your tambourine and any toys that make noise. You love to steal toys from your sister. You also love the remote and Mommy's iPhone. Shiny toys are your friends. You LOVE sissy's YBike and push it everywhere. 
Dislikes: being tired, being held for too long (you are always on the move), when Mommy get's mad at him, when the dog's lick his face.
Development: You are my reckless boy. You crawl over anything to get what you want. We've had to watch you recently because poor Sophie dog is pregnant and you always want to step on her tummy and that sweet dog just lets you do it. You take a few steps when you want but are very stubborn with it. You know lots of words and will do things when we ask like clap, give kisses, wave bye bye, come here, and turn off the lights
Words: Dada, you and Daddy also have a secret language that he calls japanese. You both make the strangest noises and grunts and then crack up about it!
Teeth: not yet but we think they are coming VERY soon
Sleep: You always have blankets by your face. You like to crawl in to the corner and scrunch your head up to the bumpers to sleep. 

Extra: Your personality is really shining through. You can be a bit of a bully in the playroom with all your toys but generally you are a sweet brother. You are definitely a scaredy cat. You don't like being tossed in the air or swinging to high and loud noises make you cry. At your birthday party we couldn't get through your smash cake because every time you ate, people would clap and you would cry and I would have to comfort you. You play very intently and then at random times crawl over to me and want to be held. I hold you for 30 seconds and then its off to play again. You always look back at me to see if I'm watching you. You still get lazy with your sippy and sometimes I have to hold you to get you to finish it. You love your sleep and are a cranky spanky if you don't get enough of it. You love to read books and your favorites are the ones with texture. You love to pet the furry animals in your puppy book. You have also gotten good at petting the doggies but sometimes you get carried away and hit them a little. You like to pat yourself on the head when you are done eating. You love the baby pool and walk all the way around the edge several times. When I carry you, you hold on tight like you are afraid I might drop you! You love turning off the lights when we leave a room. You SCREAM when I don't get food to you soon enough. You are one hungry boy. You are so sweet and loving with a little crazy mixed in! You are becoming such a boy and an adorable one at that. We are so thankful to be your mommy and daddy!

Reflections

I can't believe that it has been almost a month since I've last posted. We've been doing a LOT of living during the last month! The end of the school year is always a busy busy time for me. The twins had a birthday party and my first week out of school was spent planning and crafting. This week has truly been our first week of summer and we have been soaking up every minute of it! I am LOVING being a home with the babies and just cannot get enough of them. I'm writing this post tonight because I don't want these feelings to leave me. Today is the twins' first birthday. It amazes me that we have been parents for a year. This has been hands down the best, most satisfying, and blessed year of my life. My children are truly a gift from God and I am learning so much about who I am by being their mommy. This year hasn't always been perfect and there definitely have been some rough periods of adjustment but I wouldn't trade it for the world. As I was praying over the kids tonight I couldn't think of a single thing to ask of God. My heart was so full of gratitude for giving me this life, blessing me with these children, this husband, and my amazing family. I am feeling so extremely blessed. I can still remember this time last year, the anticipation of waiting for my c-section, the miracle of meeting each baby for the first time, watching Jay become a Dad, and all of our family meeting these beautiful babies. I am a bit sad that an entire year has passed but every stage with these two gets better and better; and while I do miss those snuggly newborns, I fall more in love with my children everyday. I am so excited to learn what God has in store for Emma Cate, Holden, and our family in the future. I am so thankful to be their mommy.

I loved having the birthday party this past week and saving this day for our family. I woke the twins up singing happy birthday and video taping their reactions. I "interviewed" them about their favorite things as one year olds. I hope to keep this tradition every year. I made banana chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast and Holden was a mess gobbling down every last bite! We had a fun playdate at the pool with a bunch of my friends from work and their kids. We all enjoyed a yummy Whole Foods cake and sang to the babies. We had their favorites for lunch (cheese, strawberries, yogurt, and turkey) and play a little before swim lessons. Both babies did great at swim today! Emma Cate floated on her back unassisted and Holden kicked to the wall and pulled himself up on the bar. Friday is photography day so I'll snap a few pictures at lessons tomorrow. The babies finished out the day with a quick trip to the mall and another favorite foods dinner (chicken fingers and sweet potatoes) with Daddy.

5 on Friday

Today I am linking up for 5 on Friday. My brain is a little fried from last week of school things so I thought this would be a fun, easy, post!

1. I get an entire weekend with my kids. These two have been sooo super fun recently. The other night I sat on the floor in their nursery out of sight and just watched them babble back and forth with each other before falling asleep.

2. Today is the second to last Friday of school. So ready for summer and being home with the kiddos everyday.

3.  Shrimp and Grits is having an amazing kids clothing sale. My shopping cart is full. 

4. Have you seen "prancercising" on youtube? My kids did this for bonus points in class today (you can tell we're in the last week of school!) I was dying laughing. 

5. My husband's cousin got engaged! Since my husband is mostly an only child, his cousins are like his brother and sister. We are super excited for Jenna and Adam and pretty stoked their wedding will be in the Dominican! Yay for destination weddings!

The Engagement & Planning Part 1

After getting engaged on October 1st, 2006, we started planning our wedding! I knew I wanted a summer wedding and I started stalking wedding pages on the knot.com. The funny thing was that I had not been to a wedding since I was a junior bridesmaid in my aunt's wedding in 1994. I had no CLUE where to begin! Lucky for me, Whose Wedding Is It Anyway and A Wedding Story were all over TV and cluttered up our DVR senior year. My poor roommates had their share of wedding! 

We started the planning by hiring a wedding planner to help guide us through the process. I am the first girl to get married and my Dad was trying to keep this process stress free for my mom... haha. I just went to look up my wedding planner's website and it looks like she is no longer in the business. I would highly recommend having a wedding planner if you have no experience with weddings. We did a partial package, where Terri and I each but in equal time during the planning phase vs. a fully package where Terri planned everything and I just said yes or no. The most important part to me would be having a day-of-wedding planner. Terri took care of EVERYTHING on the day of the wedding and it was fabulous. I'll write more about that in a later post. 

I knew I wanted a vineyard vines inspired preppy, nautical wedding. We decided that Lake Norman, one of our favorite summer spots, would be a good venue. I searched the internet for several lakeside venues that would accommodate 300+ people. We were close to booking the Pennisula Yacht Club but they lacked separate spaces for the ceremony and reception. That's when we decided to hire Terri and upon our first meeting she suggested The Point Lake and Golf Club (Now Trump International). My mom and I took a drive over there and decided it was perfect!

They only had 3 available dates and for some reason that I cannot remember now, I chose the date in September. This date was a conflict with my sister and my aunt and really I should not have picked it but hindsight is 20/20!

Wedding planning was STRESSFUL. I was uptight and navigating foreign waters. I wanted things to be perfect but couldn't decide was perfect was. My mom and I fought a lot. She tried so hard to help me figure it all out but it was difficult. I remember obsessing over every knot board looking for wedding ideas. I couldn't believe my mom wasn't as obsessed as I was about creating the perfect event :)

Terri gave us a list of vendors and we used most of them making some of my decisions easier. I wanted a lot of personalization and learned how to do a lot of designing using publisher. 

Here is our planning timeline:

October: Got engaged, hired a wedding planner, and photographer (Walters & Walters), chose our venue, our friends hosted an engagement keg party for us (what? you didn't have a keg at your engagement party?)

November: Took our engagement pictures on my 22nd birthday! Sent our save the dates. Booked our band, Spare Change- they were awesome!, I found them on another bride's knot board and booked them through their myspace page! They are still playing all over the Carolina's and I highly recommend them)

Once we set the date we sent out our save the dates. I'll have to go raid my mom's computer because I have NO pictures of them! I designed them myself and had them printed on trifold brochure paper. In the middle we glued on a DIY magnet photo strip of us holding signs that said "Save The Date". We hand tied them all with navy ribbon and I have clear memories of my family sitting around the kitchen table assembling them. They turned out beautifully and I hope that I can find a picture! 

December: My parent's threw us a holiday engagement party at their home as a place for all of our friends and families to meet. We had the best time celebrating!

(i know... faux pas putting our married monogram on anything before the wedding... we lived and learned!)

Weddings

I've decided to back track around 6 years and do a few posts regarding our wedding. We got married before I started blogging and before pinterest and I've just decided I'd love a place to record the details. I'm going to do a few wedding posts scattered here and there.

The Proposal

I'll be totally honest. I knew the proposal was coming. We had talked about it for at least year. Jay and I started dating as 18 year old freshman at NC State. We got engaged at the ripe age of 21 as seniors in college. My Mom's original diamond was given to Jay to use in my ring. I helped pick out the setting. Jay's mom, my mom, Jay and I all went to Schiffman's jewelry store in Greensboro to pick out a ring. I wanted a classic Tiffany setting. Simple and elegant. Jay bought the ring sometime in September of 2006 and I waited and waited (for what seemed like forever) for him to give it to me.

On Sunday night, October 1st, 2006, Jay called me and asked me to stop by his house on the way to my weekly sorority meeting. I stopped by and he asked me to go out back with him. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was simple and sweet just like Jay. I said yes and just like that we were engaged. I left soon after and went to my sorority meeting. Jay picked Sunday night because our sorority does a sweet little ring ceremony for girls that get engaged and its a surprise for the rest of the chapter. Our ritual chair tells that chapter that we are going to have a ring ceremony and everyone gets excited and starts guessing which girl got engaged. Jay knew that I would want to wear the ring right away and knew that I wouldn't be able to keep it a secret from my friends for very long!

After I got back from chapter, a bunch of us went back to Jay's house to celebrate. Soon after, a bunch of his fraternity brothers came and hog tied him up and took him to the lake nearby campus and threw him in! I guess it was some type of tradition! Here are a few pictures of the night!

 

11 Months

Emma Cate and Holden,
You are 11 months old. It feels like time has flown by and I'm excited for our adventures in toddlerhood!

What our life is like:

Our routine has changed a little as you've both grown and are becoming toddlers. The biggest change has been with nursing and eating. Holden especially has started to drink less and less breastmilk and is all about the finger foods! We still wake up around 6:45 and Daddy takes care of the babies while I get ready. I am still pumping in the morning but am getting ready to slow down the pumping soon.

We just switched to 6oz bottles with 1.5 ounces whole milk and 4.5 breastmilk and you each have one for breakfast. Around 8:15 you eat your solids. Usually you have yogurt mixed with fruit, toast or waffles, and an egg. You are hungry babies!  Your solid meals are at 8:15, 12, and 6:00. You are still eating a variety of foods and you both always try it even if you don't like it. Pesto pasta has become a recent favorite. Its funny how you will eat something one day and then act like you both hate it the next. Holden is definitely the eater and can put down some food. He had probably also gained 5lbs this month! Holden, you like to shove a TON of food in your mouth and cheeks and then pretend to choke. Emma Cate, you are much more dainty and it takes you forever to finish meals. You pick up each piece individually and chew.

Holden's developments this month have pretty much stayed the same from last month. You continue to crawl like a mad man, and pull up and cruise around furniture. You have let go of the furniture and stood alone before but not for long.  Emma Cate has taken off this month and had almost caught up to Holden. You crawl like a crazy woman and are a complete wiggle worm. You pull up and cruise and also like to walk behind your push toys. You've gone from seated to standing and just recently learned how to sit back down from a standing position. This took about a week and it was tons of fun when you would stand in your crib at night and wouldn't know how to get down... you would cry for us to come help you. We are glad you mastered that new skill.

Naps are a changing! You still generally take a good morning nap from 9-11 but you are both having a rough time with the afternoon nap. I think we'll start switching your schedule this month or maybe wait a bit and see how the summer goes. I hate to say that it might be time to switch to one long nap around 1pm...

Bed time is at 7pm and most of the time you are ready then but lately you seem to want to stay up later. Hopefully this summer, you'll stay up till 8 and sleep till 8 :) Can you tell Mommy is already planning summer vacation! You both love talking before bed. Its fun to watch you look at each other through the cribs and jabber away.

Holden has been a little cranky this month and I think its because his teeth are finally getting ready to come in. He's woken up in the middle of the night crying twice this month and that's unusual for him. Emma Cate now has 4 teeth and knock on wood, the teething process hasn't been too tough on either of us.

You both continue to play together more. You follow each other around and it is the cutest thing to see two speed crawlers coming towards me. Luckily, we are moving out of the bumps and bruises phase and you are both able to catch yourselves when you fall. You like to sit and look at books, push your walkers, ride on Sheldon the turtle, and explore. We often head down to the basement where are your toys are and we just watch you go from toy to toy. You are both little explorers and watching you crawl, explore, and learn is so much fun.

You do not just jump into things carelessly. You are a quick learner and once you decide to learn a new skill, you do it quickly. Your crawling happening in about 2 weeks. Your first crawl was this hilarious slither across the floor before you learned to crawl all the way. Remind me to show you the video! Likes: dancing, being naked, standing up, you love exploring. You love your lovie and holding blankets up to your face. You love your tambourine and any toys that make noise. You love to steal toys from your sister. You also love to pluck her hairbows from her head and chew on them. You also love the remote and Mommy's iPhone. Shiny toys are your friends. You also love to crawl to the baby gate and pull up.
